British cycling champion Jonathan Shubert achieved his goal and scored a new world cycling record after arriving in Salalah at around 5am despite cold temperatures that reached 19 degrees Celsius. Schubert was able to cross an outstanding distance of 1,300 km from the Omani capital to the southern city of Salalah in less than 48 hours; the official time was 47 hours and 21 minutes, breaking the previous record of six days. Schubert kicked off his journey from Muscat at 6:10 am on February 11, and spent two nights on the dark and cold roads while temperature was dropping to 13 degrees at night and rising to 30 degrees during the day. The three vehicles and the support staff accompanying Schubert managed to protect him from camels and trucks, provided him with his needs of water and food, and treated his sunburns, along with playing loud music to keep him awake, and helping him maintain his path amid the dangerous road conditions. Unfortunately, Schubert’s health deteriorated during his journey. He suffered from severe exhaustion, sunburn and fever, which required the support crew to put bags of ice on his back. Schubert felt irritation in the lining of his stomach, and was forced to take GU Energy’s hydration pills, in addition to citric acid to reduce fatigue. Unexpected winds also caused anxiety for Schubert and made it more difficult for him to travel, not to mention the severe heat that forced him to take off his helmet because of head swelling triggered by the contact with the helmet. In the last 400 kilometers of his journey, Schubert expressed admiration for the region, saying: "This is an unknown area. I have never seen such thing before." With his spirit of the challenge and his well-known determination, Schubert managed to overcome all these harsh obstacles, make his way through the mountainous terrain, and eventually arrive to his destination to break a new world record.
