US President Donald Trump condemned on Friday as a “disgrace” the behavior of Iran and Russia in Syria. "I will say what Russia and what Iran and what Syria have done recently is a humanitarian disgrace," Trump told a news conference. "What those three countries have done to those people is a disgrace." Iran and Russia are the main backers of the Syrian regime, which has since Sunday been carrying out intense air strikes on the Eastern Ghouta enclave near Damascus. The US State Department has said Russia -- whose air force is also striking Eastern Ghouta -- has a "unique responsibility" for the mounting death toll in the besieged enclave. Hundreds of people have been killed since the beginning of the week, drawing international uproar and a demand for a ceasefire resolution to be adopted by the United Nations Security Council. A vote on the resolution was supposed to be held on Friday afternoon, but it has been rescheduled. Earlier, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Emmanuel Macron asked Russian President Putin to support the Security Council resolution calling for an immediate, month-long ceasefire in Syria. “France and Germany call for an immediate cessation of hostilities and the implementation of a ceasefire to provide civilian support, humanitarian access and medical evacuation, as called for by the UN,” the two governments said. “France and Germany call on Russia to shoulder its responsibilities in this regard,” they said in a joint statement. Diplomatic sources told Reuters Merkel and Macron were also due to call Putin together after the vote in New York. Moscow, which has the power to veto UN Security Council resolutions, has often in the past blocked texts that would be damaging to regime head Bashar Assad. Russia said on Friday it was ready to support the draft resolution, but with caveats. “There are no guarantees that (the rebels) will not continue shooting at Damascus residential areas,” Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said in a briefing.
