The leader of an extremist group in the Libyan city of Derna threatened Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, the commander of the Libyan armed forces, with the same fate of late leader Momamar al-Gaddafi. The army has been besieging Derna, a town on the Mediterranean coast, for more than a year, to crush the so-called “Shura Council of Derna Revolutionaries.” “If he goes too far, the Libyan people will lead Haftar to the same fate as Gaddafi,” said Mohamed al-Mansouri, a spokesman for the group. On a different note, Libya’s El Feel oil field was forced to close on Friday morning due to the presence of armed groups. Sources quoted by Reuters said that the oil field, which is located in southwest of the country, was producing 70 thousand barrels per day, but was shut down because of the presence of armed groups in the region. Earlier this week, Reuters reported that some workers at El Feel oil field were evacuated after guards withdrew in protest over pay, according to a local source from the town of Murzuq. Meanwhile, UN Special Envoy for Libya Ghassan Salameh held a series of meetings with deputies and members of the Presidential Council in Tripoli to discuss the deteriorating situation in the country, including in the education and health sectors. The UN mission said in a comment on Twitter that Salameh met with Ahmed Muaiteq, the first deputy chairman of the Presidential Council, to discuss the results of his recent meetings on Libya. For his part, Muaiteq said on his Facebook page that the meeting touched on the most important topics on the Libyan scene, including taking future steps that are aimed at ensuring “stability at various levels.” Separately, Amnesty International condemned in a report attacks and forced disappearances against journalists, activists and human rights defenders in Libya by alleged armed groups and pro-government militias of rival governments. “Forces affiliated to three rival governments, as well as armed groups and militias, committed serious violations of international law and abuses of human rights with impunity,” the organization said in its 2017/2018 report on Libya.
