Arab League chief Ahmed Abul Gheit condemned with the strongest of terms on Saturday Washington’s announcement that it will move its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem in May. He said in a statement that the American administration’s decision is a “new and dangerous chapter in the series of provocations and wrong decisions that have been ongoing since December.” These decisions are on the verge of destroying the last hopes for peace and coexistence between Palestinians and Israelis, he said. The relocation of the embassy on the anniversary of the “Nakba” reveals the extent of the complete bias towards Israel and the lack of any reasonable reading of the nature of this conflict that has been ongoing in the region for over 70 years, he added. This decision strips the American side of any actual competence to sponsor a peace process, Abul Gheit said. Turkey earlier described as "extremely worrying" the US move to open its embassy in Jerusalem in May, accusing Washington of destroying the hopes for peace. "This decision shows the US administrations insistence on damaging the grounds for peace by trampling over international law, resolutions of United Nations Security Council on Jerusalem," the Turkish foreign ministry said in a statement. The founding of Israel on May 14, 1948 is mourned by Palestinians as the Nakba, or "catastrophe" when an estimated 750,000 Palestinians either fled or were expelled from their homes in the war surrounding Israels creation.
