The Egyptian security delegation had kicked off, since its arrival in Gaza on Sunday, first steps to resolve disputes between the Hamas and Fatah movements regarding empowering the Palestinian government. It held intensive meetings with officials and individual meetings with every minister in the Palestinian Government of National Accord to discuss the problems existing in each ministry and to eliminate the obstacles hindering their work. The Palestinian government will hold on Tuesday its weekly meeting via “video conference” from the West Bank and Gaza in attendance of ministers who have arrived from the West Bank to the coastal strip. Sources told Asharq Al-Awsat that the ministers arriving from the West Bank informed the Egyptian delegation about the internal obstacles in the ministries. According to the sources, the delegation was forced to meet the ministers at its place of residence at one of the hotels in west Gaza due to a strike declared by the Gaza Civil Servants Syndicate. The strike paralyzed ministries, government institutions, departments and schools. The government did not comment on the strike, while Hamas called on it to perform its duties and to resolve the difficult and disastrous humanitarian crises in Gaza. The delegation held, on Sunday, an extended meeting with Hamas leader in Gaza Yehya Sinwar and another meeting on Monday in the attendance of Hamas official Ghazi Hamad and the movement’s security chief in Gaza Tawfiq Abu Naim. Sources close to Hamas told Asharq Al-Awsat that the Egyptian delegation is committed to succeeding in its mission. Azzam al-Ahmed, a member of the Fatah Central Committee, who is in charge of the reconciliation talks with Hamas, hoped to maintain serious communication with the movement in order to implement the clauses of the Cairo agreement on empowering the government. Hamas and Fatah reached a reconciliation agreement in Cairo last year in order to restore the authority of the Palestinian government in Gaza and resolve the pending affairs between the rival Palestinian groups.
