US President Donald Trump and French President Emmanuel Macron vowed on Friday there would be “no impunity” in the event of further chemical weapons use in Syria. France would have a “firm response” if it transpired chemical weapons led to civilian deaths in Syria, said an Elysee statement. The Syrian regime has consistently denied using chemical weapons, though Western states have accused it of doing so. Washington has asked the UN Security Council to set up a new inquiry into chemical weapons attacks in Syria after reports of suspected chlorine use in Eastern Ghouta, according to a draft resolution obtained by AFP on Thursday. Russia has questioned UN findings that the regime carried out sarin and chlorine attacks. It was unclear when the US proposal, or a separate Russian draft resolution, on the Syrian chemical inquiry would come to a vote. France said Macron and Trump agreed to work together to implement a UN-backed ceasefire on Eastern Ghouta that has failed to stop a regime onslaught, and called on Russia to get Damascus to abide by it. In one of the deadliest offensives of the war, regime air strikes and bombardment have killed hundreds of people over 12 days in Eastern Ghouta. The UN Security Council on Saturday called for a 30-day countrywide truce. Russia, which backs the Syrian regime in the war, has instead called for daily humanitarian ceasefires from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. (0700 GMT to 1200 GMT). The US State Department on Thursday dismissed Russia’s humanitarian ceasefire plan as “a joke”, saying people were afraid to leave the area through a “humanitarian corridor” because of fear of conscription, exile or death.
