Abdul Rahman bin Ibrahim Al-Rassi, Undersecretary of the Saudi Foreign Ministry for Specialized International Affairs and Chairman of the 149th Session of the Council of the League of Arab States at the delegates’ level, said that the Kingdom would seek to develop the joint Arab action and to promote the activities of the Arab League Secretariat. Speaking at the opening of the session on Sunday, Rassi pointed out that the current financial situation in the League, if it persisted, would confine the Secretariat’s ability to carry out its activities, noting that the situation necessitated reconsidering the Staff Regulations and Rules of Procedures and reorganizing the work of specialized organizations. He added that the Kingdom would seek, during its presidency of the Ministerial Council and the Summit, to develop systems of joint Arab action, highlighting major challenges experienced by the Arab countries, especially the Palestinian issue. The Saudi official underlined his country’s stance towards to need to achieve peace and restore the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people and to establish an independent Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital. Commenting on the situation in Yemen, Rassi said Saudi Arabia “supports the legitimate Yemeni government against the Houthis’ aggressions, provides humanitarian assistance, and supports UN efforts to implement the relevant Security Council resolutions.” As for Syria, the Saudi official said the situation required a peaceful solution in accordance with the resolutions of the Security Council, including the preservation of the unity of Syrian territory and the need to strengthen and support the moderate Syrian opposition and the formation of a transitional government in order to stop the bloodshed. On Sunday, the Council discussed eight points of joint Arab action, in particular, the Palestinian cause and the Arab-Israeli conflict, in addition to issues of national security, international political affairs information, human rights, and legal, financial and administrative affairs.
