JEDDAH: Saudi children who joined a global competition to draw their “dream cars” have had their artistic efforts rewarded at a ceremony at a local hotel in Jeddah on Friday. The Toyota Dream Car art contest, now in its 12th year, invited children from around the world to envision environmentally friendly vehicles of the future. Abdul Latif Jameel, the Saudi-based global transport firm, organized the competition in the Kingdom. More than 10,000 Saudi children, including students from international schools, took part. Children and parents gathered to hear winners named in three age categories. Munir Khoja, Abdul Latif Jameel’s executive director of telecom marketing, said: “This event involved children in designing the cars of the future.” Waleed Mohammed, 15, from Hail, winner of the 12-15 age group, told Arab News: “My car has a special option on the windscreen that helps people with weak eyes to see everything normally.” Winner of the 8-12 age group, Tareq Al-Swaieed, from Jeddah, said: “I dream of a car that will help people with disabilities drive without the need for anyone to help.” Father of 5-year-old winner Yasmina Majid said: “Yasmina kept on reminding us of the ceremony date out of excitement. She loves to draw every day.” The winners’ drawings will be sent to Japan, where judges will decide the best artworks from more than 80 countries. Ola Al-Najjar, a Saudi artist and one of the judges, said: “We were looking for ideas, spontaneity and the efforts children made to deliver a message. The more convincing the idea, the more chance for the little artist to win.”
