DUBAI: Police have jailed 69 parents in India’s Hyderabad amid claims they allowed their underage children to drive, Gulf daily Khaleej Times reported. Children between the ages of 14 and 16 were caught driving cars, scooters and motorcycles around the city without licenses the report added. “We have been imposing fines through the courts for the past two years, but it did not have the desired impact (on underage driving),” Deputy Commissioner of police A.V. Ranganath said. “(After the January accidents) we requested local courts citing various Supreme Court judgments that underage driving should be treated seriously as it not only endangers the lives of the minor drivers but of others too. The courts were convinced.” The fathers of the minors were jailed for one to three days and fined for allowing their children to drive. The crackdown on underage driving began in February after several accidents left five minors dead in the city.
