The Iranian judiciary took another escalatory measure against ex-Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad by sentencing Hamid Baghaei, a vice president under Ahmadinej, to 15 years in prison. Baghaei was arrested, hours after Gholam-Hossein Esmaili, the head of Tehran province’s Justice Department, said there was a green light to transfer him to prison. Hours before the transfer, IRGC spokesperson General Ramezan Sharif responded to a letter sent by Baghaei on Monday to Commander of Irans IRGCs Quds Force Maj. Gen Qassem Suleimani demanding that he refutes charges regarding his embezzlement of more than 4 million euros from IRGC. Last month, Baghaei said that accusing him of confiscating the funds of the Quds Force proves the involvement of IRGC commanders, saying they should be brought to justice. As reported by Tasnim, Sharif said that the claims “made by an indicted individual” are baseless. Responding to accusations made by Baghaei against the Quds Force, he noted that the judiciary founds its sentences on precise documents. This step came three weeks after a letter sent by Ahmadinejad to Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, urging him to conduct primary reforms to maintain the public trust in the regime.
