US National Security Advisor Herbert McMaster accused on Thursday Iran of continuing on fueling chaos in the Middle East. Since 2012, it has spent more that 16 billion dollars in supporting the Syrian regime of Bashar Assad and its proxies in Syria, Iraq and Yemen, he remarked at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum Simon-Skjodt Center in Washington. The museum was holding a ceremony marking the seventh anniversary of the Syrian war. McMaster accused Russia and Iran of obstructing US efforts in Syria, adding: “All civilized nations must hold Iran and Russia accountable for their role in enabling atrocities and perpetuating human suffering in Syria.” “It is time to impose serious political and economic consequences on Moscow and Tehran,” he demanded. Iran, he continued, is “proliferating dangerous weapons, fueling sectarian violence, and supporting terrorist proxies and militias, such as ‘Hezbollah’.” “Assad should not have impunity for his crimes, and neither should his sponsors,” said the US official. The seventh anniversary of the revolution should be an invitation to remember the sides who have deepened the suffering of the Syrian people, he continued. McMaster listed US efforts to document atrocities committed by the Syrian regime and its allies, as well as its efforts to defeat terrorist organizations, offer humanitarian aid to victims, protect innocent civilians and have Assad answer to the use of chemical weapons. He underlined the need to defend the Syrian people and combat extremist and terrorist groups. “Today, on the seventh anniversary of the Syrian war, let us all promise to remember and to act,” he urged.
