Moscow is insisting that all factions leave the Eastern Ghouta in Syria, informed sources told Asharq Al-Awsat on Saturday. They added that talks were currently ongoing to implement the demand and determine whether the factions should head to norther or southern Syria. Those factions include Faylaq al-Rahman, al-Nusra Front, Ahrar al-Sham and Jaish al-Islam. Representatives from Faylaq al-Rayman are expected to meet on Sunday with Russian forces in eastern Damascus to discuss a settlement concerning the withdrawal from Eastern Ghouta. On Saturday, Syrian regime forces controlled the two towns of Saqba and Kafar Batna following fierce battles with Faylaq al-Rahman factions that control the southern pockets of Eastern Ghouta. As regime forces advanced in the area, talks were initiated by leading figures from the southern towns of Ghouta to reach a settlement that could protect them from the spread of battles. However, those talks reached no results. Meanwhile, Moscow announced that the US was preparing for a missile attack against Syrian regime positions. General Sergei Rudskoi, head of main operations for Russias General Staff, said his country sees signs that the United States is readying strikes on the regime as carrier strike groups have been deployed for the purpose. "We are aware that there are signs of preparations for possible strikes," the general was quoted by TASS news agency. He added that "groupings of strike carriers that carry cruise missiles have been deployed" in the Mediterranean and Red Seas.
