Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, embarked on Monday on an official visit to Washington, a trip that has made headlines in the United States. This would mark the first time the Saudi royal visits the country since his appointment last year as crown prince. The visit comes at a very important time given the developments in the Middle East and the various security threats and political instability there, most notably in Yemen and Syria. Iran will also feature in the prince’s talks with officials given its meddling in the affairs of other countries that is aimed at destabilizing them and expanding its influence in the region at their expense. In fact, the Iran file will be Prince Mohammed’s main priority during talks with President Donald Trump. The two leaders are expected to meet at the White House later on Tuesday. They will address its ongoing disregard of the sovereignty of other countries, as well as its financing of militias to create chaos in the region. Discussions on selling US nuclear reactors to Saudi Arabia will also take place, given that Riyadh is seeking to decrease its dependence on oil. The Wall Street Journal reported that Prince Mohammed and Trump will tackle how the US could take a stricter stance on Tehran. It said that the Crown Prince’s position on Iran has been welcomed in the American administration, which is in turn seeking a firmer approach on Tehran given its unacceptable policy in the region. The daily noted that the dismissal of Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and appointment of former FBI chief Mike Pompeo as his replacement will pave the way for adopting this firmer stance on Iran, which is what Saudi Arabia aspires for. Owen Daniels, of the Atlantic Council, said that one of the most important files Prince Mohammed will discuss with Trump is how to confront Iran through an American-Saudi strategy. He expected the US to adopt a firmer stance, whether unilaterally or with its allies. Trump had repeatedly expressed his opposition to the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, which was aimed at limiting its nuclear aspirations in return for easing sanctions against it. Daniel said that Iran’s ongoing support for the Houthi militias in Yemen and its ambition to develop its ballistic missiles program both threaten the region. Prince Mohammed and Trump will focus on maintaining Washington’s support for the Saudi-led Arab Coalition in Yemen. Many US newspapers highlighted the social reform plan championed by the Crown Prince, especially in women’s rights and gender equality. On the economic front, RBC Capital Markets Helima Croft said that Prince Mohammed’s visit is also aimed at attracting foreign investments to Saudi Arabia. She noted his series of reforms as part of the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 plan. He is seeking on his US trip to project the image of the changes taking place in Saudi Arabia in order to attract these investors and reshape the local economy, she explained. On his reform program, the Washington Post said that Prince Mohammed is forging ahead with his plan to restructure the Saudi economy and end its dependence on oil. He is seeking to rebuild the economic system, it explained. He is also determined to confront all the previous challenges that Saudi leaders have constantly delayed in tackling over the past four decades. It said that the US is eager to get on board the Crown Prince’s reform and transformation plan. The Wall Street Journal stressed that Prince Mohammed has changed the status quo that has been present in Saudi Arabia for several decades. It credited this to his series of economic and political reform that the Kingdom has started to implement.
