DUBAI: The United Arab Emirates said on Wednesday it had pledged 1.84 billion dirhams ($500 million), to support the United Nations’ humanitarian response plan in Yemen, state news agency WAM reported. The UAE, which is part of the Saudi-led military coalition in Yemen, said the donation was part of the coalition’s plan to provide $1.5 billion to support UN operations in Yemen. The UAE pledge comes after Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman presented the previously pledged donation Tuesday to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. Guterres thanked Prince Mohammed for the contribution to alleviating what the UN calls the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, with 22 million people needing aid. Guterres added that ultimately, “the solution is political.” Saudi Foreign Minister Adel Al-Jubeir said the prince and the UN leader “had a very productive and comprehensive meeting.” He said they talked about avoiding foreign intervention in Yemen, particularly from Iran.
