Iran’s parliament raised its demands to President Hassan Rouhani to move forward with his promise to lift the house arrest of leaders of the reformist movement, namely former Prime Minister Mir-Hossein Mousavi and Mehdi Karroubi. “National harmony will not be achieved unless the house arrest is lifted,” said Parliament Deputy Speaker Masoud Pezeshkian. He called on Rouhani to work on fulfilling his promises and move to resolve the case of Mousavi and Karroubi, who are both in their eighth year of house arrest. Pezeshkian also criticized the double standard the government is following in dealing with former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and reformist President Mohammad Khatami. Unlike Ahmadinejad, Khatami faces restrictions, including those barring his attendance at public events, and actively appearing in Iranian media. “Internal harmony cannot be achieved with house arrests and prisons," Pezeshkian said in an interview with the ISNA news agency. He added that the failure of the Iranian regime to solve internal conflicts “will complicate social problems” and tip off social balance, pointing out that the “dispute” inside Iran revolves around justice in regional issues, minorities and gender discrimination. He implicitly warned of the return of popular protests, which swept more than 80 cities in Iran, if the authorities failed to bring justice for the people. “It is important for those responsible for policy-making and the administration to know that there is no right to confront a group or a person outside the framework of justice. Rather, it must be fair, but unfortunately it is not in our behavior,” Pezeshkian said. As for differences between the reformists and Rouhani, Pezeshkian said: “Logic requires him to meet the needs of his clients.” He urged Rouhani to answer the demands of reformists who supported him throughout his political career. “If we do not keep our supporters, we will lose them,” he advised. “In political and social dealings, we must take our supporters into account ... I think the government is not working properly in this area, and the problem lies here,” Pezeshkian concluded.
