Dubai: AFP photographer Ahmad Gharabli on Wednesday took home first prize at the Arab Journalism Awards in Dubai for his work documenting protests in Jerusalem. Gharabli, who has been with Agence France-Presse since 2006, won first place in the photojournalism category at the Arab Media Forum for a series of images documenting Palestinian demonstrations in east Jerusalem. Among his work is a photo of four women huddled in fear against a shuttered storefront as an Israeli policeman on horseback dispersed a December 9, 2017 protest. Gharabli, 37, is himself a Palestinian from annexed east Jerusalem, which was seized by Israel in 1967 in a move never recognized by the international community. The annual Arab Media Forum, held Tuesday and Wednesday in Dubai, was dominated this year by the global fight against “fake news.” The forum also featured a talk by AFP global editor-in-chief Phil Chetwynd, who addressed the growing impact of visuals on the news in the digital era.
