Conflicting reports emerged on the number of Iranian Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) members killed on Tuesday during an attack on the country’s border with Pakistan. The IRGC said four of its members were killed in the Baluchistan province, while the Jaish al-Adl group (Army of Justice), which carried out the attack, put the toll at eight. “A terrorist group from Pakistan attacked a police post in the border area,” the IRNA news agency said on Tuesday. Jaish al-Adl issued a statement saying members of the extremist group attacked the Iranian post, killing eight members from the “Mersad” forces linked to the Revolutionary Guards. The attack took place in the suburbs of Mirjaveh, around 75 kilometers southeast of Zahedan, the capital of Sistan-Baluchistan province. Another statement issued by the IRGC said Iranian forces had foiled a “terrorist” attack on a border control tower. The Guards confirmed that a terrorist team from inside Pakistan attacked the watchtower, killing four of its members. Two Jaish al-Adl members were injured in the attack. The Revolutionary Guards criticized Pakistani authorities for supporting the group, warning against future instability. In the past, Iran had criticized Pakistan for supporting Jaish al-Adl, which it accuses of ties to Al-Qaeda and carrying out numerous attacks in Sistan-Baluchistan. The province in southeastern Iran has long been plagued by unrest from both drug smuggling gangs and separatist militants. Baluchistan denies the Iranian accusations, describing them as “a pretext to attack border residents.” Jaish al-Adel describes itself as a faction carrying weapons to protect the rights of “Sunni” Baluchistan residents from the practices of the Iranian regime.
