Palestinian factions and the family of Palestinian engineer Fadi al-Batsh, 35, who was killed Saturday by unknown assailants in the Malaysian capital, Kuala Lumpur, accused Israel’s Mossad intelligence service of assassinating him. Two men on a motorcycle fired 10 shots at Batsh, killing him on the spot, Kuala Lumpur’s Police Chief Mazlan Lazim said. He was walking from his apartment to dawn prayers at a local mosque in the suburb of Gombak when he was shot, according to officials. According to police chief Datuk Seri Mansor Lazim, the two attackers had waited for him in front of a residential building for almost 20 minutes, and they fired at least 10 bullets, four of which instantly killed him. Palestine’s Ambassador to Malaysia Anwar Al Agha later identified the victim as Palestinian Fadi al-Batsh, an engineering lecturer, but HE declined to say if he was a member of Hamas. Witnesses at the scene had told him that the two suspects had “European features”, the ambassador told Reuters. Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said that the suspects in the killing, who fled the scene, were believed to be Europeans with links to a foreign intelligence agency, state news agency Bernama reported. Hamidi added that Batsh was active in pro-Palestinian non-governmental organizations, describing him as an expert in electrical engineering and rocket-building, according to Reuters. He could have been seen as "a liability for a country that is an enemy of Palestine," Zahid was quoted as saying by Bernama. Batsh’s cousin Khaled al-Batsh, who is a senior official of Palestinian Islamic Jihad group, accused the Mossad of carrying out the assassination, the Associated Press reported; however, he did not further comment. Batsh was a lecturer at the University of Kuala Lumpur, specializing in power engineering, according to the university. He had lived in Malaysia for the past 10 years. In a statement on Twitter, Hamas described Batsh as a "young Palestinian scholar" from Jabalia in the Gaza Strip. It described him as a "martyr" and said he was a "distinguished scientist who has widely contributed to the energy sector". He was a "loyal" member and a "scientist of Palestines youth scholars”, Hamas said. He was “assassinated at treacherous hands on Saturday...as he walked for the dawn prayers,” it added in the statement.
