Libyan National Army commander Khalifa Haftar returned to his country on Thursday after receiving treatment at a Paris hospital. His plane flew in from Cairo and landed in the eastern city of Benghazi, some two weeks after he left the country. He was seen smiling and dressed in a black suit as he greeted generals from the LNA. Haftar declared in a speech upon his return: “We made a vow to the people that the country will be rid of terrorist groups.” “The Libyan National Army will lead the people to their goals. The LNA was not destabilized during the recent plight,” he added. There was much speculation over the health of the Libyan strongman, which the LNA blamed on misleading media reports and the Muslim Brotherhood. News of his return was confirmed in a report by Asharq Al-Awsat on Thursday, with LNA spokesman Ahmed al-Mismari tweeting a message to the Libyan people on Wednesday, saying: “Tomorrow (today) will be a very great day in Libya’s history.” Haftar had arrived in Cairo on Tuesday at the head of senior Libyan delegation after recovering from his health setback. “The field marshal is well, but some saboteurs from extremist groups, starting with the terrorist Muslim Brotherhood, are spreading news that his health is deteriorating,” said his brother Omran.
