Lebanese Interior Minister Nouhad al-Mashnouq acknowledged on Saturday that his ministry did not not exert enough efforts to ensure that the elderly and disabled had the necessary access to voting stations for the upcoming parliamentary elections. He apologized for the shortcomings of the committee that was formed to facilitate the voting process for the elderly, disabled and special needs voters. “Administrative measures have been taken against the concerned committee” for failing in its duties, he said. He revealed that it had presented him with its accomplishments only a week ago, two weeks ahead of the May 6 polls. Mashnouq stressed that “quick solutions” were put in place, starting with establishing voting stations on ground floors. Civil Defense members will also be deployed at all stations, while companions of the disabled will be allowed to help them with the voting process. Vehicles transporting the elderly and special needs individuals to voting stations will be granted access to the campus where the voting station is located, added the minister.
