Hamas blamed the Palestinian intelligence service for the bombing of Prime Minister Rami al-Hamdallah convoy in Gaza last month, creating a series of statements rejecting the movements narrative. The National Reconciliation Government accused Hamas of promoting a narration full of justifications. The government’s spokesman Yusuf al-Mahmoud said that Hamas’ insistence on blatantly alienating itself from the norms is a surprise, especially when the movement linked the Palestinian people with terrorist groups in Sinai. "This is a “childish” attempt to strike the relationship with our brothers in the Arab Republic of Egypt by inventing a character "Abu Hamza al-Ansari", who turned out to be Ahmad Sawafta, a laborer from Tubas, who was arrested for years in Israeli jails because of his affiliation with the Islamic Jihad and was never part of the institutions of the national Palestinian authority,” added the spokesman. Hamas spokesman Iyad al-Bazm accused the Palestinian intelligence services of being behind the bombing in March which targeted convoy of Hamdallah in Gaza Strip and caused the collapse of Palestinian reconciliation. "The investigations led to a person known as Abu Hamza al-Ansari, the founder and director of the jihadist media platform, through which the sabotage cells are managed, directed and exchanged information," said al-Bazm at a press conference in Gaza. After extensive investigations, Abu Hamza al-Ansari, who is Ahmed Fawzi Saeed Sawafta, from the West Bank, was identified. He worked for the General Intelligence Service in Ramallah under the instructions of the officer, Haidar Kamal Hamadeh, under the supervision of Bahaa Balousha. During the conference, the Interior ministry showed a video of a number of detainees. The announcement came a month after the main suspect in the assassination attempt, Anas Abu Khoussa, 26, was killed while trying to arrest him. The family of Ahmed Fawzi Sawafta, denounced Hamas statement, stressing that it was all lies. The family also held the movement responsibility for all the consequences of the abuse of its son, as he is detained in Israeli jails, a former prisoner also spent "his youth years in the prisons of the occupation for belonging to the Islamic Jihad." However, Islamic Jihad issued a third statement, denying the government spokesmans statement in the West Bank about Sawaftas link to Jihad. An official source confirmed that Ahmad Fawzi Sawaftas connection with Islamic Jihad was terminated after he was dismissed from the movement in 2007 while in prison. The movement considered the attempts by some parties to link Ahmed Fawzi Sawafta with the Islamic Jihad, are rumors aiming to tamper with the security of the province, and the city of Tubas. Earlier on March 25, Asharq Al-Awsat published a report in which Hamas was inclined to point fingers towards the PA, focusing on the beneficiaries of the bombing and intellectual delinquency, but Egyptian pressure prevented Hamas from immediately announcing the accusations. Hamas had hoped Abbas would back down on measures taken against Gaza, including salary cuts, and hoped Egypt would succeed in resuming reconciliation efforts and overcoming the crisis. President Abbas, however, insisted on fully taking over Gaza Strip, and said he would continue his actions. He plans to declare Gaza a “rebel territory”. Hamas accusation of power somehow indicates a breakdown in efforts to restore reconciliation. Member of political bureau of Hamas, Khalil al-Hayya said that what is needed now is "to apologize to the Palestinian people for this false accusation and the unjust measures taken by the PA against Gaza." Hamas also asked the Palestinian President to terminate all measures against the Strip. Hayya proposed forming a national committee of factions, Fatah, Hamas and the Executive Committee to come to Gaza to show them the things as they are in the Strip. The Palestinian government official spokesman expressed "the governments regret over what Hamas has presented," adding that the movement irresponsibly handled the supreme national interests of the people. The Palestinian government reiterated on Sunday its call for Hamas to accept unity, end the division and return to national unity, and abide by President Abbas plan of full and comprehensive handover of all the tasks and powers in the Gaza Strip. The government also indicated that once achieved, this will enable it to manage the interests of the people and empower the Palestinian cause to face challenges.
