LONDON: A US Federal Judge in New York has ordered Iran to pay more than $6 billion in compensation for families of victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks on the city in 2001, according to a document shown to ABC News in the US. The ruling by Judge Georges B. Daniels stated that Iran, its Revolutionary Guard Forces and its central bank are responsible for the death of 1,008 civilians in a court case sponsored by victims’ families. The court case that was first filed in 2004 was allowed to proceed in 2016 after Congress passed a law permitting the prosecution of parties that fund terrorism. Judge Daniels, in his ruling, blamed Iran for training and supporting the plane hijackers. The compensation packages range from $4 million to relatives like siblings and parents and $12 million for wives or husbands of victims. The prosecution lawyer Robert Havilly said that the ruling was made possible last December when a federal court in New York deduced that 9/11 attacks were only possible due to Iranian funding and support for the hijackers. ABC News said that the ruling was symbolic as Iran is unlikely to admit guilt or discuss compensation. Yet the ruling will allow 1,008 families of victims access to a frozen Iranian fund, that was used in the past to compensate victims of attacks by Hezbollah on US interests in Lebanon and elsewhere.
