Godolphin finish third in the big race But there are plenty of wins elsewhere for the Godolphin operation Members of the royal family in Dubai were out in force at Newmarket in England yesterday to watch raiders from the UAE perform well in the first Classic meeting of the British season. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum, the Vice President of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and his wife, Princess Haya bint Al Hussein, led the contingent at the Rowley Mile course which was the scene of the 2000 Guineas Stakes. Crown Prince of Dubai Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum and Deputy Ruler of Dubai Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al-Maktoum were also present to see the UAE lay a marker down for the UK flat racing season In the feature race, Masar finished third for Sheikh Mohammed’s Godolphin, finishing just over a length and a half behind to winner Saxon Warrior. “We were very pleased with the run of Masar,” trainer Charlie Appleby told the Godolphin website. “William (Buick) went out with the mindset that we were going to go forward and he has given the horse a lovely ride. Masar got into a nice rhythm but William said that he felt like a horse that wants a step up in trip. He just got caught a bit flat-footed when they quickened and was galloping back at the line." Godolphin will now consider stepping up the three-year-old New Approach colt for the Derby at Epsom Downs in June. “It was a very good run from Masar,” Buick said. “He has grown up again mentally — he took everything in the race really well and was very relaxed throughout. He is a very well-balanced and athletic colt, so I don’t think that a course like Epsom Downs would be a problem for him. The way he relaxes in his races, he should have a good chance in the Derby.” Godolphin did taste victory in four of the other races on the card. Oasis Charm won the Spring Lodge Stakes; Tribal Quest dominated the Hot Streak Handicap; unbeaten three-year-old Key Victory scooped the 2000 meter Havana Gold Newmarket Stakes while Symbolization won the last race of the day. Elsewhere, there was more glory for the UAE when Defoe, owned by Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al-Maktoum, won the Dunaden Jockey Club Stakes.
