The Kremlin warned on Tuesday of serious consequences that could result from US President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw from the 2015 nuclear deal with Tehran. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters a decision from the US to leave the deal would carry “inevitable harmful consequences.” He added that Moscow considered maintaining the agreement a basis for “preventing the deterioration of the situation and strengthening the areas of non-proliferation of nuclear weapons.” Russia’s position on the deal “absolutely coincides with the position taken by the leaders of European capitals,” Peskov said. “You know the consistent line of the president, aimed at the need to preserve the JCPOA as the only real basis for further maintaining this valuable status quo. Also you know well the position of the Russian side … [and] about the inevitable disastrous consequences of any actions aimed at scrapping these agreements.” When asked about the nature of the consequences Moscow is warning of, the spokesman pointed to serious concerns that the Trump decision could undermine the existing system of control, adding that there was no alternative to the agreement signed by the concerned parties on the Iranian nuclear file. In a sign of Russia’s readiness to approach European positions, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced on Tuesday that it did not rule out a discussion of France’s proposal to develop a new agreement with Tehran. It referred to Moscow’s acceptance of negotiations to introduce amendments in order to take into account regional and international concerns about Iran’s missile program and regional policies. Russian diplomatic sources stressed that Moscow was considering all possibilities, including continuing to abide by the nuclear agreement, especially with regards to the resumption of economic cooperation with Iran and lifting restrictions on a number of exports to the country.
