A top North Korean official was headed to New York on Tuesday, by the time Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov prepares to visit Pyongyang, in light of accelerated diplomatic preparations for the historic summit between US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un. A meeting is set to take place between US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Kim Yong Chol, vice chairman of North Koreas ruling Workers Party Central Committee and right-hand man to North Korea’s leader, according to AFP. Trump confirmed in a tweet that Kim Yong Chol was on his way for what would be the highest-level meeting this week. “We have put a great team together for our talks with North Korea,” Trump said in a Twitter post on Tuesday. “Meetings are currently taking place concerning Summit, and more. Kim Young (sic) Chol, the Vice Chairman of North Korea, heading now to New York. Solid response to my letter, thank you!” he added. "So far the readout from these meetings have been positive and well continue to move forward with them," White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said, confirming the plan is still for the leaders to meet in Singapore on June 12. Moscow said Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov would travel to North Korea on Thursday to discuss Pyongyangs nuclear program.
