Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz’s call to convene an Arab quartet to help Jordan confront its economic crisis fell in suit with the Kingdom’s long-known history of initiatives to support fellow Arab countries during times of strife. Saudi Arabia has for decades succeeded in achieving milestones in terms of courage, heroism and bravery. Saudis have fought on the field alongside Jordan, Syria and Egypt, in battles for Palestine against Israel. This is not to mention the Kingdom’s unbound generosity in providing financial support to Arab countries against their enemies. Beyond military and financial engagement, Saudi Arabia has also employed its international political weight in providing assistance, through both undisclosed and declared positions, in the service of Arabism and in pursuit of national and moral values. King Salman is one of the most ardent supporters of Arab causes. He served his fellow Arabs since his political debut as governor of the Riyadh Province in 1954 and has continued to serve them after he came to power in 2015 as the seventh king of the modern Saudi Kingdom. Saudi contributions are unmissable across the Arab world, from Algeria’s 1958 revolution fundraising campaign, to backing the Palestinian cause and aiding a war-torn Lebanon end its 1975-90 civil war. In the city of Taif in 1989, Saudi Arabia hosted Lebanese leaders to end their country’s conflict. The meeting culminated in the Taif Accord that saved Lebanon from the abyss of war. Saudi forces had also taken part in the Arab Deterrent Force to preserve Lebanon’s security. In Kuwait, Saudi Arabia stood against the invasion of its Arab Gulf neighbour, hosting Kuwaiti war escapees until the conflict was over. Saudi Arabia also stood against American arrogance and its assumption that it could launch attacks against Iraq from the Kingdom. Finally, in Yemen Saudi Arabia is saving no effort in its mission to restore legitimacy, stability and security to the war-torn country against the clutches of the Iran-backed Houthi militias.
