Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi underlined his country’s continued efforts to stop the deterioration of the situation in Syria and to preserve the capabilities of the Syrian people, based on its steadfast stance towards the crisis. Sisi stressed the need to reach a political settlement that would preserve the unity of the Syrian territories and the State entity and institutions and eradicate terrorist organizations. The presidents comments came during his meeting on Tuesday with UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura, in the presence of Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry, Acting Chief of Egyptian General Intelligence Abbas Kamel and Ramzi Ezzeddine Ramzi, Deputy Special Envoy of the United Nations. Ambassador Bassam Radi, spokesman for the Egyptian presidency, said in a statement that the president called on the international community to work towards reaching a comprehensive and lasting solution to the Syrian crisis, stressing Egypt’s support for the efforts of the UN envoy. The spokesman quoted Sisi as saying that Egypt would spare no effort to support the Syrian people, stop their suffering and meet their aspirations to restore security and stability in their country. According to Radi, the UN envoy reviewed latest developments in Syria and the efforts of the United Nations to reach a political settlement, warning that the continuation of the crisis represented a serious threat to regional and international security and led to catastrophic humanitarian consequences. De Mistura also emphasized the importance of Egypt’s role in the Middle East as one of the pillars of stability in the region, adding that he was looking forward to increasing coordination and consultation with the country in the coming period to work to break the deadlock, according to Radi’s statement.
