A meeting between Interior Minister Nohad al-Mashnouk and Director General of the General Security Major General Abbas Ibrahim ended a possible crisis over the entry of Iranians into Lebanon without the stamping of their passports. The interior minister said he would review the issue with Prime Minister-designate Saad Hariri, after he had leaked information about his intention to cancel the decision upon his return to Lebanon on Wednesday. Earlier this week, Lebanese General Security announced a decision to issue Iranian travelers entering the country landing slips instead of stamping their passports, creating controversy, especially amidst mounting US and Western pressures on Tehran. The General Security asserted that such decisions are “entirely within its jurisdiction,” and do not mean that Iranians have entered the country illegally. “We have agreed to continue consultation with the prime minister on the issue of stamping the passports of Iranians to take the appropriate decision and end the controversy”, Mashnouq said following his meeting with Ibrahim, with whom he also discussed the recent naturalization law. In this regard, Mashnouq said: “Talks about the payment of money in return for naturalization are incorrect; some people represent an asset for Lebanon, and giving them nationality facilitates investment in the country.” Ibrahim said after the meeting that he would provide President Michel Aoun with a report about the naturalization decree, containing the names of the concerned persons.
