Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump will hold their first summit together soon in a third country, the Kremlin announced on Wednesday following the talks between Putin and US National Security Adviser John Bolton. Kremlin foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov said the summit would take place in a mutually convenient third country and that several more weeks were needed for preparations. He said Moscow and Washington would announce the time and place of the summit on Thursday. “This meeting has been planned for a long time,” Ushakov said, Russian news agency Tass reported. “It has enormous importance for Russia and America, but it has huge importance for the whole international situation. I think it will be the main international event of the summer.” Trump and Putin last met in November 2017 in Vietnam during an APEC summit, AFP said. Relations between Washington and Moscow are languishing at a post-Cold War low. They are at odds over Syria, Ukraine, allegations of Russian interference in the 2016 US presidential election and accusations Moscow was behind the poisoning of a former Russian spy in Britain in March. "Your visit to Moscow gives us hope that we can at least take the first step to reviving full-blown ties between our states," Putin told Bolton at the Kremlin after the two smiled and shook hands for the cameras. "We never sought confrontation," Putin said, adding he regretted that the Russia-US ties were not "on top form.” In greeting Bolton at the Kremlin, Putin said that Russia is willing to discuss how to "restore full-fledged relations based on equality and mutual respect." Bolton, for his part, said that he wanted to talk with Putin about "how to improve Russia-US relations and find areas where we can agree and make progress together." "Even in earlier days when our countries had differences our leaders and their advisers met, and I think that was good for both countries, good for stability in the world and President Trump feels very strongly on that subject," Bolton stressed. He complimented Putin on his handling of the football World Cup, currently taking place in Russia, and he said he is looking forward to “hearing about how you handled the World Cup so successfully”.
