Swiss ace strolls into second round in SW19 Path to final made easier with defeat of Borna Coric, the man who beat him at Halle Roger Federer caused a stir when he began his quest for a ninth Wimbledon title with a new logo on his chest but everything else looked familiar as he crushed Dusan Lajovic 6-1 6-3 6-4 in glorious Center Court sunshine on Monday. The 36-year-old’s whites were missing the usual swish and the familiar RF emblem were gone after the 20-times Grand Slam champion ditched long-term kit supplier Nike in favor of Japan’s Uniqlo brand. The top seed’s new sponsor only got one hour 19 minutes of airtime as Federer began in stunning fashion — dashing off the first set in 20 minutes — and never looking remotely troubled as he sauntered into the second round. Lajovic shook off his early nerves to at least give Federer some practice in the second and third sets but the Serbian could do no better than last year when he also suffered a straight-sets defeat by the Swiss, that time in the second round. Federer, contesting his 20th consecutive Wimbledon, is bidding to become only the second player to win nine singles titles on the London lawns after Martina Navratilova. “I felt very good from the start which is nice,” Federer, who has now one 24 consecutive sets at the All England Club after blazing to the title last year without dropping one, said on court. “Felt at home right away. Got the early break in each set and I was able to bring it home.” Meanwhile, Federer’s quest for another Wimbledon title was made more easy when Borna Coric became the highest seeded male to exit on Day 1 when he lost 7-6, 6-2, 6-2 to Daniil Medvedev. Having defeated Federer eight days earlier to claim the title in Halle, the 16th-seeded Croat had been scheduled for a third-round meeting with the reigning champion at the All England Club. Medvedev ensured there would be no rematch as he saved a set point on his way to taking a close-fought opener via a tiebreak before cruising to victory in just short of two hours. The 22-year-old Russian next faces Guillermo Garcia-Lopez of Spain. Thirteenth-seeded Milos Raonic is also through to the second round after a comfortable 7-5, 6-0, 6-1 victory over British wildcard Liam Broady. In the women’s draw five-time champion Venus Williams advanced to the second round at Wimbledon with a 6-7 (3), 6-2, 6-1 victory over Johanna Larsson. Having struggled to establish a rhythm against her Swedish opponent during the opening set, the ninth-seeded Williams won 10 games in a row from 1-2 in the second to take control. The 38-year-old American, the oldest woman in the draw, reached the 2017 final where she was beaten by Garbine Muguruza. Australian Open champion Caroline Wozniacki cruised into the second round with a 6-0, 6-3 win over American Varvara Lepchenko. Wozniacki took 59 minutes to complete the victory on Center Court, finishing it off with a service winner. The second-seeded Dane has never been past the round of 16 at the All England Club but showed good form on grass by winning her second title on the surface at Eastbourne last week.
