Lebanese Forces Party leader Samir Geagea expressed his satisfaction with the results of his meeting with President Michel Aoun, with whom he discussed the formation of the government and the dispute between the LF and the Free Patriotic Movement (FPM) over ministerial portfolios. Geagea said he expected a government solution to emerge in the coming days, and announced that he agreed with the president on a road map for cooperation in the next phase. Geagea said in a press conference at Baabda Palace on Monday: “I told President Aoun that he can count on the Lebanese Forces, and we have set a roadmap for that.” “We did not address any defense strategy but rather agreed on a roadmap to speed up government formation,” he stated. “We tackled all issues related to government formation. We did not put a veto on anyone, and at the same time we don’t want a veto to be put on our party,” he added. The LF leader underlined the need to accelerate certain measures that would contribute to the swift formation of a new government. Geagea also said that he preferred the issues of ministerial sizes or shares would be tackled or addressed though the media. The relationship between the Lebanese Forces and the Free Patriotic Movement has witnessed a significant decline in the past months, especially after the elections held on May 6, and was further strained due to disputes over the government formation. While the LF wants four ministerial portfolios, based on its parliamentary size, the FPM leader, Minister Gebran Bassil, insists on giving the party no more than three ministers, and deprive it of a sovereign portfolio, which the LF is demanding.
