An Egyptian court sentenced on Saturday a Lebanese woman to eight years in prison accused of of “insulting Egypt and attacking religion” over a video she posted online, and set July 29 as the date for her appeal. The court issued a verdict on Mona El-Mazbouh, who was referred to an early criminal trial last month on charges of "deliberately broadcasting false rumors which aim to undermine society and attack religions," according to the indictment issued by Egypt’s Public Prosecutor. Mazbouh was initially handed down 11 years but the sentence was later reduced to eight, and fined 10,700 Egyptian pounds (around $598). Mazboun’s video, which she posted on her social media account, went viral when it was later published on YouTube to be viewed by hundreds of thousands of viewers. Mazbouh tried to apologize in another video, but lawyers had already filed complaints against her, prompting the Public Prosecutor to demand her arrest on charges of "insulting the Egyptians". In the video, she also claimed that a sum of money was stolen from an apartment she rented near the coastal city of Alexandria on a previous visit to Egypt. She also attacked Egyptian’s behaviors during Ramadan Month saying that one restaurant was late in bringing her food because they don’t serve people before the break of fast. Mazbouh later posted an apology video, saying “I definitely didn’t mean to offend all Egyptians.” She was arrested in May before departing from Cairo International Airport after the Public Prosecutors Office ordered Mazbouhs detention for 15 days pending investigation. During Saturday’s hearing, Mazbouhs lawyer presented medical reports and newspaper clippings indicating that she suffered from brain diseases, which affects her psychological integrity. In a similar case, authorities arrested Egyptian activist Amal Fathy earlier in May after she posted a video online in which she also lashing out at the state after a negative experience in and outside a local bank branch. Also using curses, she railed against what she described as the country’s deteriorating public services and unchallenged sexual harassment. She said she faced verbal harassment, launching a scathing attack at the bank’s employees, which then prompted the bank to file a lawsuit against her. She has since remained in custody and still awaits sentence.
