Fatma Mohammad, a psychiatrist, was boarding the train when she went into labor In a few minutes, the train cabin was turned into a mock up emergency room CAIRO: An Egyptian mother reportedly went into labor whilst on board a train between Cairo and Aswan, a news report said on Monday. Fatma Mohammad, a psychiatrist, was boarding the train when she went into labor. And when she couldn’t hold back her muffled screams, a gynecologist on the same cabin heard her and came to her assistance. Dr. Eman Shawqi told news website Masrawy that after checking the mother’s condition, she noted that she was going into early labor. “At first sight I thought she was in her early pregnancy phases but after checking on her I was sure that she was in labor and I could already see a baby head coming out,” Shawqi reportedly said. The gynecologist immediately called on fellow women passengers to assist her. In a few minutes, the train cabin was turned into a mock up emergency room, with women passengers demanding men to stay at the other end of the cabin. They also used available sheets to cover the area where the mother was giving birth to ensure her privacy. During this time, Fatma was still afraid , but the gynecologist said: “The women passengers supported the mother, telling her delivery will be easy.” Shawqi said the delivery was easy, but the problem was how to cut the baby’s umbilical cord. One woman had scissors, and the gynecologist took it to be sterilized quickly, and covered the baby with a towel. Luckily, the gynecologist had some post-labor medication in her purse, which she gave to the mother to reduce her pain. Another male gynecologist was also present on the train and has come to their assistance, and checked on the baby, whom he said was in good health.
