US President Donald Trump has asked eight times for a meeting with his Iranian counterpart on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in September, but his request was repeatedly denied, according to Iranian President Hassan Rouhani’s Chief of Staff. "During Rouhanis last visit to New York for the UN General Assembly session, Trump asked the Iranian delegation eight times to have a meeting with the president," Mahmoud Vaezi told reporters on Wednesday, according to Mehr news agency. Vaezi said the Iranian team had not responded to the requests, which came just after Trump announced he can no longer confirm Irans compliance with the 2015 nuclear deal, leading to his eventual withdrawal from the pact in May. "We have a transparent policy and clear position with regard to our relations with the US that (we) will not yield to pressure," Agence France Presse quoted Vaezi as saying. Trump has said he is open to talks on a new deal with Iran that goes beyond its nuclear program to include its regional behavior and missile defenses. However, Iran has said there is no chance of a renegotiation on the nuclear deal. In addition, the chief of staff confirmed on Wednesday that Rouhani is considering a cabinet reshuffle over the country’s economic situation. Vaezi said there would be some changes in cabinet posts in the near future, without naming the ministers or the officials who will be changed. Observers expect the dismissal of ministers of economy, trade and industry, in addition to the governor of the Central Bank of Iran. Earlier this week, Supreme leader Ali Khamenei summoned Rouhani and his government for an emergency meeting, during which he requested a change in government posts. Rouhani has come under pressure by parliament and political factions to make changes to his economic team as the Rial has plunged to new lows. Many even asked the President to resign.
