Caretaker Education Minister Marwan Hamadeh told Asharq Al-Awsat on Friday that head of the Free Patriotic Movement Jebran Bassil is mainly responsible for hindering the formation of the Lebanese government. “Lebanon might be heading towards a very dangerous ruling crisis in case President Michel Aoun does not place limits to Bassil’s behavior,” said Hamadeh, who is also an MP representing Walid Jumblat’s Progressive Socialist Party. He said Lebanon is not facing a cabinet crisis as much as a political crisis caused by Bassil, who is acting as the country’s President, Prime Minister and Speaker, allocating shares and ministerial portfolios and preventing the formation of a government based on the results of the last parliamentary elections. Hamadeh said the formation of the cabinet anytime soon is possible, but only requires concessions by some parties. “The patience of the Lebanese people began running out from Jebran Bassil,” Hamadeh said, calling on Aoun to set limits for the behavior of his son-in-law, whom the MP accused of infringing on the Lebanese Constitution and the Taef Accord. Hamadeh downplayed reports over Aoun planning on terminating the role of Saad Hariri as PM-designate due to the delay in the cabinet formation. The minister said the wisdom of Speaker Nabih Berri, the resilience of Hariri and the endurance of some political parties, such as the PSP and the Lebanese Forces, would all help Lebanon avoid the abyss. Hamadeh denied there was a so-called Druze obstacle to the cabinet formation. “The issue is not about offering a ministerial seat to (Druze) MP Talal Arslan but it is rather summed up in preventing Jebran Bassil from laying his hands on the Druze representation in the cabinet,” he told Asharq Al-Awsat.
