Son of jailed Iranian reformist Mehdi Karroubi said on Saturday sources informed him about a decision to lift the house arrest imposed on his father and on Mir Hossein Mousavi and his wife, who had been under house arrest for seven years for leading mass protests in 2009. The Insaf news website which is close to the Etemad Melli or National Trust party quoted Hossein Karroubi as saying that the Supreme National Security Council has discussed details of the house arrest enforced on the two reformist leaders. Sources said the Council already sent its final decision to Iranian Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has 10 days to veto it so that this case can be concluded. “In case the Supreme leader does not respond in 10 days, the decision will come into effect,” the sources said. Karoubi’s son said the latest comments delivered by First Vice President Eshaq Jahangiri sent positive signals concerning the Supreme National Security Council’s decision to lift the house arrest. Jahangiri lately said his country would soon witness what he called a "great show of internal unity," with national figures coming together to fight off economic pressures. Mousavi, 76, and Karroubi, 80, were reformist candidates in the controversial election of 2009, which was won by hardliner Mahmoud Ahmedinejad. Karroubi leads the National Trust Party. He was the speaker of the parliament and a presidential candidate in the 2005 and 2009 presidential elections. Mousavi is a leader in the Green Revolution, which started following the 2009 presidential elections when Mousavi and Karroubi claimed the vote was rigged, triggering months of mass protests. The two leaders were then placed under house arrest without trial in February 2011, along with Mousavi’s wife, Zahra Rahnavard. Also, the Jamaran news website, which is close to Khomeinis office, said that the decision to lift the house arrest would also involve Irans former president Mohammad Khatami.
