Yemeni President Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi ordered on Saturday the formation of a presidential committee to resolve renewed conflict in the liberated areas in Taiz province. It will be tasked with settling Tribal infighting and shoring up local authorities led by Governor Amin Mahmoud. A government source told Asharq Al-Awsat that the assigned committee is also composed of high-ranking military and civilian leaders that will begin field inspections in Taiz right away. The team of experts and officials hope to gather more information about security repercussions and occurring armed clashes that have been renewed. The source said that President Hadi, during his meeting with Taiz civilian and military leaders, expressed discontent towards the continued chaos in the city, considering it irresponsible and caused by the lack of awareness among local political forces and parties. He said that Taiz political forces must put aside personal agendas and put first public interest, focusing their efforts on resolving battles with Houthi militias. Houthis overran Sana’a in September 2014, toppling the government and placing the freely elected President Hadi and other senior members of his cabinet under house arrest. After fleeing his Houthi captors, Hadi established a temporary base in Aden. Local and security sources in Taiz confirmed to Asharq Al-Awsat that Taiz clashes between armed factions resulted casualties despite efforts by Mahmoud to calm down conflicting parties. Mahmoud also tried to redirect armed factions to prioritize and focus on completing the liberation of the besieged city. Over the past months, rivalry between these factions has led to low-security levels, accompanied by a series of successive assassinations of soldiers, civilians and local leaders, amid civilian pleas for direct government intervention to end the conflict. In a meeting with high-profile officials and military commanders, Hadi stressed the importance of overcoming the differences that are used as a pretext to delay the decision in the province for the benefit of the coup forces and serve their goals. It is noteworthy that Houthi militias still control some of Taiz’s eastern and northern territory along with a number of other directorates, while government forces control the southern and western parts of the city.
