British-Iranian Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe has returned to prison in Iran after the judiciary rejected a request to extend her three-day temporary release. Zaghari-Ratcliffe was temporarily released on Thursday after more than two years in jail. She returned to Tehran’s Evin prison on Sunday evening to continue serving her five-year term. Zaghari-Ratcliffe, a project manager with the Thomson Reuters Foundation, was arrested in 2016 when she was about to board a flight back to the UK with her daughter after a visit to her family in Iran. She was accused of attempting to orchestrate a “soft overthrow” of the regime and espionage, which she denies. A campaign under the title “Free Nazanin” announced the arrest on its official Twitter page saying: “We have just heard the sad news that Nazanin’s extension has been refused and she has returned to prison.” The campaign posted a photo of Nazanin with her daughter with the caption: “Here is the moment she said goodbye to a distraught Gabriella.” Earlier, Zaghari-Ratcliffe was told that authorities had approved a request put in by her lawyer for an extension to the furlough, but the prosecutor’s office notified her later that a permit had not been signed off and she had to return to prison. Agence-France Presse (AFP) quoted her husband, Richard Ratcliffe, saying she was shivering, shaking and crying when the deputy prosecutor told her earlier in the day that she had to be separated from her daughter again. “This feels a dark world. I used to pray, but these past two years I’ve lost much of my faith. Who would take a child from their mother?” Nazanin told Richard on the phone before going back to prison. Earlier, Free Nazanin campaign confirmed Nazanin’s release from Evin prison on furlough. “Initially the release is for 3 days -her lawyer is hopeful this can be extended. She is currently with her family in Damavand. Thanks to everyone who has carried us this far,” it added.
