Head of Libya’s Government of National Accord Fayez al-Sarraj vowed that he will not be “lenient” with those violating the stability of the capital Tripoli. He also demanded that firm measures be taken against sides that are obstructing the political process in the country. Sarraj had received on Friday a telephone call from European Union foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini to discuss the militia clashes that had raged in the city for weeks. She informed him that the Libyan crisis will be on the agenda of the EU foreign ministers meeting that will convene on the sidelines of the upcoming United Nations General Assembly. She stressed in a statement that the Libyan people deserve to live in security and peace. She also urged the concerned authorities to speed up their efforts to conclude the transition period and achieve stability in the country’s democratic institutions. For his part, Sarraj said that his government had dedicated all means to ensure the security of the people and it will deal firmly with those jeopardizing their safety. Italian Foreign Minister Enzo Milanesi weighed in on the crisis, underlining the positive role played by the UN to reach stability. He stressed that stability was necessary for Libya to hold presidential and parliamentary elections, which have been scheduled for December. Malta, meanwhile, issued a travel advisory for its citizens, urging them against heading to Libya. It also ordered those in the North African country to leave immediately due to the security instability. It warned its people of the possible threat of terrorist attacks by the al-Qaeda and ISIS groups, revealing that extremist organizations had said they may target foreigners and foreign interests in Libya.
