RIYADH: The “Treasures of China” exhibition will open on Wednesday (Sept. 12) at the National Museum in Riyadh. It will be inaugurated under the patronage of Prince Sultan bin Salman bin Abdul Aziz, president of the General Authority for Tourism and National Heritage. The exhibition, which lasts until Nov. 23, shows a rare collection of artifacts that embody the ancient civilizations of Chinese. It includes the globally known terracotta army, which was made of clay during the reign of the first emperor of China, as well as 200 other artifacts, some of which have never been showcased outside China. The exhibition selected a collection of archaeological artifacts from 10 Chinese museums in chronological order, starting with “the beginning of the civilization” and ending with “the stage of imperial power and royal tolerance.” It aims to introduce the development of Chinese civilization and showcase social life, culture and the arts of the country over thousands of years. This exhibition comes as an extension of the cooperation in the field or archaeology between Saudi Arabia and China within the framework of the joint cooperation agreement between the two countries in the fields of archaeology, antiquities exhibitions and museums activities. On the sidelines of the exhibition, the Saudi National Museum will display models of Chinese artifacts found in archaeological excavations in different locations of the Kingdom. This reflects the commercial exchange between China and the civilizations of the Arabian Peninsula. It will also dedicate a space to showcase the excavations currently carried out by the joint Saudi-Chinese team in Al-Qunfudah province. The General Authority for Tourism and National Heritage had signed multiple agreements with other countries in order for them to organize similar exhibitions at the National Museum as part of its visiting exhibitions program. This comes as a part of The Custodian of The Two Holy Mosques Program for the Care of Cultural Heritage implemented by the Authority.
