Representatives of Israeli Arabs, and East Jerusalem and West Bank factions have met in Ramallah to agree on a joint plan of action against the racist nation-state law and announce a general strike on October 1. In their statement released Tuesday, the attendees affirmed their united stance towards the law, which states that “the right to exercise national self-determination” in Israel is “unique to the Jewish people.” The law, which was passed by the Israeli parliament on July 19, establishes Hebrew as Israel’s official language, and downgrades Arabic — a language widely spoken by Arab Israelis — to a “special status.” The committee and the factions called on the UN, its relevant institutions, international and regional organizations, and human rights organizations to reject the law. The conferees invited Palestinians across the globe to launch a general strike and carry out events on Oct. 1 to express the unity of the Palestinian people and their attempt to confront the racist law and whoever stands behind it. Ending the political, geographical and institutional division among Palestinians, restoring national unity and reinforcing the position of the Palestine Liberation Organization can defeat the racist law, stressed the statement.
