Saudi Arabia reiterated its support for United Nations efforts to find a Yemeni settlement on Thursday, but stressed the need to abide by recognized peace references that are the Gulf Initiative, the outcome of national dialogue and relevant UN Security Council resolutions. The confirmation came during a meeting between Saudi Ambassador to Yemen Mohammed Al Jaber and UN special envoy to Yemen Martin Griffiths in Riyadh. Both diplomats met at the headquarters of the Saudi Program for the Development and Reconstruction of Yemen. Yemeni internationally-backed President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi and Al Jaber had announced eight new projects in August, as part of the long-term Saudi Reconstruction Program in Yemen (SRPY). Announced in May 2018, SRPY accelerates the work of companies specializing in upgrading critical infrastructure in Yemen. This includes building and expanding civil, industrial, educational and medical facilities complete with state-of-the art technology. Al Jaber highlighted Saudi efforts, especially those delivered by the Arab Coalition backing the Yemeni freely-elected government, spent on supporting humanitarian operations in Yemen in contrast to atrocities carried out by Houthi coup militias. Briefing Griffiths on plans and projects initiated by the Saudi center for reconstruction efforts in Yemen, Al Jaber said that his mission is in total support of UN efforts so long they abide the three abovementioned references for sustainable peace in Yemen. For his part, Griffiths stressed his efforts on persuading the Iran-backed Houthi militias to return to consultations.
