The UN’s 5-day general debate begins on Tuesday, Sept. 25, where leaders from the 193 Member States gather to discuss hot issues and set the global agenda for the year ahead, in a world filled with nightmares of prolonged crises, as UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres describes it. The official theme for 2018 is Making the United Nations relevant to all people: global leadership and shared responsibilities for peaceful, equitable and sustainable societies. Meanwhile, the world anticipates what US President Donald Trump would have in mind as he attends the New York meetings. On Monday, US President Donald Trump will arrive in his hometown, New York, where he is hosting a special meeting called "Global Call to Action on the World Drug Problem." According to the Associated Press, 124 countries have already signed up to support the agenda, The US President will also attend a luncheon hosted by Guterres and a reception by US Ambassador Nikki Haley, as the current President of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). On Tuesday, Trump will deliver his second speech to the General Assembly. On Wednesday, he chairs a session on Iran aimed at discussing the nonproliferation of weapons of mass destruction, according to a “concept paper” distributed by the US permanent mission. “The Security Council must identify ways to ensure its resolutions on WMD threats are respected,” a concept note issued on Friday said. “States that violate these resolutions must be held accountable. In addition, all breaches of non-proliferation treaties and agreements must be treated seriously with consequences.”
