Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is putting the finishing touches on his speech before the UN General Assembly on Thursday in New York – a speech that is expected to contain strong rhetoric against the United States. Abbas arrived in New York early on Monday to hold a series of meetings with world leaders and heads of delegations participating in the General Assembly’s 73rd session, aimed at exploring the possibility of launching an international peace conference, one of his demands to the United Nations. Sources told Asharq Al-Awsat that Abbas would hold the United States responsible for damaging the peace process and would ask the world to intervene, “so that no one bears the consequences” of the US actions. According to the sources, the Palestinian president seeks to present two options to the international community: either guarantee a serious world intervention to save the peace process, or he will have to make difficult decisions at the meeting of the Palestinian Central Council next month, which would include the suspension of recognition of Israel and the cancellation of agreements with it, leading to the cancellation of the Oslo Agreement and the declaration of a Palestinian state under occupation. At the internal level, Abbas is waiting to hear clear answers from Egypt about its latest attempt to salvage reconciliation, and whether Hamas would hand over the Gaza Strip to the Palestinian Authority. Meanwhile, Jordan’s King Abdullah II affirmed the importance of reviving negotiations between Palestinians and Israelis based on the two-state solution, during his meeting with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. Arab States have reiterated their support to the two-state solution, which was stated in the text of the Arab peace initiative, which Abbas considers as a reference in the political process.
