The family of Libyan intelligence officer Abdelbaset al-Megrahi demanded compensation for the period he spent in prison. Megrahi was accused in 1988 in the case of downing a US airplane in Lockerbie. Megrahis case surfaced in the political arena after the Daily Mail published parts of a book written by US author Douglas Boyd where he affirmed that Iran stands behind the bombing. A Scottish court issued a life-sentence in 2001 in the case of Megrahi for the charge of bombing a Boeing 747-121 where 259 were killed, along with 11 people on the ground. Lawyer Ghada Abdelbaset al-Megrahi demanded on behalf of her family a compensation for each hour her father spent in the British prisons. Ahmad Hamza, of Libyas National Commission for Human Rights (NCHR), said that a judicial statement is anticipated to plead innocent Megrahi or condemn other parties. The book of Boyd might have leaked facts and information that acquit the former regime in Libya and accuse Iran, he added. To Asharq Al-Awsat newspaper, Hamza said that the Iranian regime adopts through its policy and approach practices that target the safety and stability of western states, the US and the Arab countries region. He added that the Libyan authorities can refuge to the international judiciary to fix the damage caused to the country because of this case. The official authorities in Libya didn’t comment on what has been mentioned in the book of the US author regarding Megrahi – however, many in the political and rights circles are now demanding to reveal the truth and disclose those involved in the case.
