Palestinian Prime Minister Rami al-Hamdallah called on all the Palestinian factions and people to be present in the Bedouin village of Khan al-Ahmar, which is facing demolition plans by Israel. The premier, accompanied by a number of ministers conducted on Thursday a solidarity visit to the village, which is located east of Jerusalem, to express support to the residents who are resisting a plan by Israel to demolish their houses in order to build a Jewish settlement. “Through this popular resistance, we will abort all these schemes,” Hamdallah said. “Our presence here in Khan al-Ahmar carries a message that says we are going to fight to defeat the deal of the century,” he added, noting that his government was facing huge financial pressure but would remain strong and would not abandon national principles. Last month, Israel ordered the residents to voluntarily demolish their homes by Oct. 1, before starting to implement a forced evacuation of the area. Many members of the Palestinian Authority, together with the residents, have been holding a sit-in there for the past 122 days in an attempt to protect the place. Israel’s Supreme Court has rejected petitions to prevent the demolition of the village, siding with the Israeli authorities which say it was built without the required permits. Palestinians say such documents are impossible to obtain. Residents of Khan al-Ahmar arrived from the Negev desert in 1953. Since then, they lived in conditions that lacked the most basic necessities, until Israel decided to expel them ten years ago. Around 200 Palestinians, 53 percent of whom are children and 95 percent registered with the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), live in the village. Some 170 pupils from nearby areas benefit from the school located in the village.
