Israel witnesses a general strike on Tuesday to protest over violence against women. Over 200 institutions announced will join the strike, including the Knesset, the Social Security Administration, Civil Service Commission, and the Social Workers’ Union. The strike was announced following the murder last week of two kids – Silvana Tsegai, 12, in South Tel Aviv and Yara Ayoub, 16, in Jish. Their killings add to a chain of 23 murders of women this year when 16 females were murdered in each of 2016 and 2017. In both 2014 and 2015, 13 women were killed per year while 160 women were murdered during the past decade. MK Aida Touma-Suleiman considered that this huge number shows the police inactivity and the government’s failure. Two girls were killed for gender reasons and every girl or woman can be killed, this is the horrible truth, she said. Suleiman added that she never trusted this government and that it violated human rights – she described it as the government of occupation and violence that would not give women justice. She said she was not the only person demanding to bring down the government, she has the voices of the 160 victims of women who were killed in the past decade, Suleiman stressed. Let the government continue to hide and we will continue to strive for the sake of women and all citizens – we have declared the state of emergency and for the first time the women in Israel will be on a general strike, she stated. During her speech, the Kenneset guards used force to drive out some activists from the hall. This made Suleiman stop her speech to say that what is currently happening symbolizes the violence practiced against women everywhere.
