CAIRO: A round-up of bogus reports and phony facts in the mainstream and social media. 1. Spectre of fake news Several Egyptian news websites have carried reports quoting Egyptian actor Mohamed Karim denying that he is appearing in the next James Bond movie. Citing the actor’s recent interview on US website Hollywood.com, the Egyptian news outlets said Karim had denied reports that he is to play a villain in the upcoming “Bond 25” film, which is set to be released in 2020 and stars Daniel Craig. 2. Up in the air Khartoum International Airport has ensured that all flights to and from the Sudanese capital are operating normally, the state-run news agency said in the wake of recent protests. “Air traffic at the airport is proceeding as usual,” SUNA said, denying news reports that foreign airlines have decided to halt flights after fluctuations in the dollar due to the ongoing unrest. 3. The plane truth The Moroccan Embassy in Algiers, in a communiqué issued on Sunday, denied news circulated by an Algerian football team accusing Moroccan authorities of blocking an Algerian airliner carrying fans to the city of Tangiers. The civil aviation authorities in Morocco granted the required license to the Air Algerie plane to transfer fans of the Youth Al-Saoura Club to Tangiers, the statement said. The plane was carrying 148 Algerian fans heading to Morocco to attend the match.
