A photo of Saddam Hussein, raised by some students at Anbar University, resulted in the permanent sacking of three students, and the dismissal of others for one academic year, according to comments by the university president, Khalid Bital Al-Najem. Al-Najem added that an “investigation is still ongoing with the students,” pointing out that “the delinquents will be referred to the competent authorities to receive their fair punishment.” It is not clear whether the students will be prosecuted according to the provisions of a law pertaining to the banned Baath Party. The law stipulates that anyone, who tries to “engage in any political or intellectual activity that encourages, promotes or glorifies the Baath Party’s ideology, or the affiliation to the party, will be sentenced to 5 to 15 years of imprisonment.” Al-Anbar University announced on Tuesday the expulsion of three of their students who were holding up a picture of Saddam Hussein during a gathering on campus the previous day. Videos showed students from the department of agriculture crowding together, waiting for, and cheering on an individual to finish speed-painting a headshot of Hussein onto a canvas. The university has “taken the legal proceedings to expel three of the students… permanently and punishing others by dismissing them for one academic year,” the university president told Iraqi media outlets.
