Masters champion sets sights on world No.1 ranking. Reed cannot wait to tee it up at inaugural European Tour event in Saudi Arabia. LONDON: Patrick Reed is looking to state his case for why he can become world No. 1 at this week’s Saudi International. The US Masters champion currently finds himself at 15th in the world rankings and has been as high as No. 7. But faced with a strong field at the Royal Greens Golf & Country Club the American ace is determined to prove he belongs in the top 10 and even make it to top spot. “I just need to continue down the path and grinding and putting myself in position playing on Sunday in golf tournaments,” Reed said. “The only way you get an opportunity to become No. 1 in the world is by winning golf tournaments and having that chance on Sundays consistently. “(Current world No. 1) Justin Rose has done an absolutely amazing job, (Brooks Koepka) has played some great golf all last year, as well, and in order to get to that spot, you have to consistently have a chance to win golf tournaments and close out tournaments, not just once or twice a year but three, four, five times a year.” Reed is just one of a number of big names playing at the European Tour’s first ever event in the Kingdom and the strength in depth of the field is one of the reasons he decided to tee it up by the Red Sea coast. “To have four of the top five players in the world, and lots of former world No. 1s just speaks volumes for the event,” he said. “It speaks volumes about how strong the European Tour is getting.”
